Weed Management Workshop MONDAY 6/15 at the Sunol AgPark in Alameda County

Weed Management Field Day
For new and beginning farmers and ranchers

Presenter: Jim Leap.  Farm Manager, emeritus, for the UC Santa Cruz Agro-ecology program farm and garden, part of the UCSC Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. Jim is currently the farm advisor for the Sunol AgPark and other SAGE projects. He also works on USDA field station trials, advises on the UCSC farm program, and runs his own small farm.

Topics: In this workshop we will cover the basics of effective weed management in an organic system. We will discuss the pros and cons of tools and techniques for dealing with weeds in diverse cropping systems. The following topics will be covered in by in-field demonstrations and discussion:
* Importance of timing * Crop rotations * Planting and cultivation techniques* Flaming *  Organic herbicides * Irrigation management * Tillage techniques 
* How to deal with problem perennials * Examples of weed management “systems”

Location: The workshop will take place at the Outdoor Classroom at the Sunol AgPark, located by the first entrance to the AgPark (right past the SFPUC corpyard and before the Sunol Water Temple)
